From 2013- Dean of College, Camberwell College of Arts

Camberwell College of Arts is one of the six Colleges (Chelsea College of Arts, Wimbledon College of Arts, London College of Communication London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins) that make up the University of the Arts London. It is the world’s sixth best University for Art and Design in the QS World University Rankings® 2017 and has 18,205 HE students. Camberwell offers courses in Art, Design and Conservation. With around 1,700 Foundation, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and PhD students

Key Responsibilities-

  • Academic Leader and Manager for Camberwell College of Arts (1,700 FE, UG and PG students)
  • Academic and Management lead for the Camberwell Building re-developments (69 Million new academic building and related works to existing buildings)
  • Academic and Management lead for Foundation Diploma at Camberwell College of Arts (including University lead for Ofsted Inspection, 2017 inspection resulted in outstanding in all categories)
  • Responsible for the academic, personnel, financial (Consumable, £200,000 Associate Lecturer £867,230.00 and Staff Development (£50,000, 65 fulltime and part time academics, 100 Sessional academic staff) and administrative affairs of the College
  • Responsible for communicating the vision and goals of the College to community and professional constituencies and seeking public and private funds to support the goals of the college
  • Responsible for FE, UG and PG recruitment at Camberwell College of Arts

As Dean of Camberwell College of Arts, I have strengthened a range of external agencies, these include Southwark Council (including supporting their writing of a new Cultural Strategy linked to redevelopment of the borough and the development of seedbed studios for recent graduates at Elephant and Castle), British Council (Matter of Stuff project), Hotel Elephant (seedbed studios and exhibition spaces) Museum of Ethnology Osaka, Japan, Crafts Council, Design Council, London Design Festival, Design Junction, Flat Time House, Wellcome Institute, Vanguard Court, David Usborne’s Collection of Curious Tools, the relocation of the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and the South London Gallery.

I have also led a number of partnerships and collaborative initiatives including collaborations with London Design Week, Tokyo Design Week, Oslo School of Architecture and Design, IED Madrid (as a Erasmus Mundus application) Camberwell College of Arts Open House, Camberwell Arts Festival (I am a trustee), Dulwich Picture Gallery the Peckham Townscape Heritage Initiative, Kings and Maudsley Hospitals, Peckham Platform, ELIA, Wellcome Institute, British Council (China and Japan), Keizai University, Bunka University, Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai), Pratt Institute and Holts Academy.

Within my current role I secured University investment in the development of the new build (69 million campus development,) and the refurbishment of the existing buildings and will also include a Halls of Residence at Camberwell on the campus.

These buildings will ensure the current Camberwell site at Peckham Road has a unique London campus environment, which provides high quality teaching and research facilities for students and the opportunity to develop new courses and how they can work academics and students can work together across disciplines. The works include-

  • Larger studios and extended teaching space
  • A new 250 seat lecture theatre
  • A new library and study space
  • A new public gallery
  • A student-led exhibition space
  • A fully accessible entrance
  • The creation of an outside courtyard that will be a focal point of the campus
  • On site student accommodation with dedicated, 24-hour study space

Throughout the building project as part of a change management approach I used this opportunity to discuss with courses teams and students the ‘true’ costs of their courses and their delivery. It has lead to a better and more strategic understanding of the delivery costs (highlighting where potential hidden costs may lie) and promoted a more informed discussion about different delivery models (through re-validation such as MA Visual Arts from 5 small courses to a one higher recruiter course, the integration of theory across the four BA (Hons) Fine Art courses provision), the setting of recruitment and progression targets, new approaches to 3rd stream funding (beyond the traditional short course model, such as Crowd Funding and the uses of Social Media) and a similar approach I took working with LVMH and the work I undertook with Professor Louise Wilson (at CSM) and the integration of external projects, competitions, bursaries and Scholarships.
